Speak to Me

Hello and welcome!
To “break the ice” I’m going to share a song I wrote to help focus my weekly prayer group. The current theme of our meetings is prayers of petition and intercession. One of the biggest obstacles we face in this type of prayer is remembering to listen.
Sometimes it is easier to just list (to God) all the things we feel that are maligned in our lives. It seems that even prayers of thanksgiving are easier than listening to what God has to say to us.
Here are the words. I hope to have a recorded version soon, but the sheet music is available at the bingbit store on Lulu (lulu.com/bingbit).

Today is a gift and you deserve my praise,
Oh, Lord.
I pray for the strength to listen and to obey
you, my God.
Sometimes it’s like I’m way too loud.
I must quiet my heart to hear.Speak to me,
Prince of Peace.
Give me strength for the journey.
Show me the path,
God of Light.
Speak, O Speak to me.My heart burns to listen to the words you say,
Jesus.
My song is a prayer that your will be the only way,
Yahweh.
Sometimes it’s like I’m way too loud.
I must quiet my heart to hear.Speak to me,
Prince of Peace.
Give me strength for the journey.
Show me the path,
God of Light.
Speak, O Speak to me.

[...] The second one is tough. Especially for us extroverts. I’ve heard from two different sources in the past week that it takes between 17 and 20 minutes for us to get to a state where we are focused enough on our prayer to really be able to listen. How often to I even pray for 20 minutes? It’s rare. Even in extended prayer time I’m issuing a rambling litany of complaints, requests, and less often thanksgiving. But I rarely give God a chance to Speak to Me. [...]
